Susana

26th June 09

I am pleased to introduce you to my new crew member Susana.  Susana is from New Zealand and has been looking after high level quadriplegics for a few years now so was the ideal candidate as my crew member for my trans Atlantic voyage.  She is not a sailor herself but will be undergoing several training courses as part of the preparation for the voyage, including a Ship's Doctor course, Survival at Sea, VHF and Competent Crew.  Hopefully, with me doing all of the sailing and Susana looking after my physical care, she will never need any of these skills but they are essential in forward risk planning.  Susana has been with us for nearly a week now and is beginning to get a feel for the complexities of putting together a trip like this.  In many ways, I think people will be as interested in Susana and how she copes with looking after a quadriplegic whilst sailing the Atlantic as people will be in my side of the story.

I have already set up my own Twitter and Blog page but we may do the same thing for Susana so you get to hear her side of the story too.

Anyway, enough from me.  I'll let Susana do her own introduction...!!

"Hi there!  As Geoff said, I'm Susana and it's great to be able to be a part of this exciting adventure.  I first became aware of this project last December when I arrived back from travels in South America and my friend Kate had seen a job advertised for a carer needed for a high profile, record breaking expedition.  Needless to say the curiosity of what this could possibly be got me to apply and I received an email from Geoff outlining his plans.  Never in my wildest dreams did I ever picture myself here taking part in such a cool journey, but here I am!

"I'm really excited and Geoff, Elaine, Timothy and Max the dog have made my first week here a very easy transition and I feel like part of the family already.  I'll be looking forward to making another blog appearance soon.  Happy days"
